Longtime CBS News Host Set To Leave Network After One Final Broadcast

Norah O’Donnell’s role as the anchor and managing editor of “CBS Evening News” is set to conclude with tonight’s broadcast, signifying the end of a significant era in the network’s history. Over the past five years, O’Donnell has been a trusted figure in countless homes, providing breaking news and conducting high-profile interviews.

CBS Evening News commemorated O’Donnell’s final broadcast with a heartfelt message on social media. During her farewell segment, she received a surprise tribute from Oprah Winfrey, who lauded her commitment and influence in the field of journalism.

“Congratulations. You have much to be proud of. Your tenure as the anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News has not only garnered awards but, more importantly, has made a substantial impact and informed our nation,” Oprah remarked.

A retrospective segment followed, showcasing O’Donnell’s journey through pivotal historical events, including her reporting from conflict zones, exclusive interviews, and thorough investigations that prompted meaningful change.

O’Donnell, who initially announced her departure from the anchor position last July, has indicated that she will not be leaving CBS News entirely. She will transition to a senior correspondent role, continuing to engage with major stories and special coverage across the network’s platforms, including “60 Minutes.”

Although her original plan was to conclude her role after Friday’s broadcast, CBS has revised the schedule, moving her final appearance forward by a day due to the network’s coverage of the Farmers Insurance Open golf tournament.

“After this year’s election, I’ve decided I will be leaving my role as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News to take on a new position at the network,” O’Donnell stated in her July announcement. “We just celebrated an amazing five years together. I love what I do, and I am so fortunate to work with the best journalists and people in the business. Together, our team has won Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards.”In her concluding remarks on Thursday evening, O’Donnell expressed, “It has been a tremendous honor to serve as the anchor for this esteemed broadcast. The CBS Evening News holds the distinction of being the longest-running evening newscast in America for good reason, supported by the most exceptional journalists globally, including correspondents, producers, researchers, and crews who dedicate themselves to delivering the news each night. This commitment will remain steadfast because journalism is vital. I am aware of this due to the feedback I have received from many of you, our viewers.”

O’Donnell’s tenure at CBS has been characterized by her coverage of some of the most significant events of the last decade. The announcement of her departure from the anchor position coincides with a period of considerable transformation for CBS News.

“I extend my gratitude for all that you contribute to our broadcast and our audience on a daily basis. Ensuring that we report on this election with the excellence and compassion that epitomizes our collaborative efforts is of utmost importance to me.” She concluded, “I feel incredibly fortunate to share these values with numerous dedicated journalists who understand the critical role of journalism in fostering a healthy democracy. Onward!”
