Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney expressed her views on X on Monday in response to President Trump’s comments suggesting that she might face imprisonment. Cheney has consistently opposed Trump, notably serving on the contentious January 6 Committee. Recently, former President Joe Biden granted a pardon to Cheney and other committee members, which has raised eyebrows among Trump and his supporters.
Cheney remarked on X, “Trump’s statements made in the Capitol Visitor Center today serve as a reminder that neither falsehoods nor the individuals who propagate them improve with time.” The Republican from Wyoming criticized the former president for his alleged inaction during the January 6 riots, asserting that he failed to direct his supporters to cease their actions. Nevertheless, Trump was recorded urging his followers to protest peacefully.
She further stated, “The evidence presented by the Select Committee is accessible on various platforms, and as a criminal defendant, Donald Trump has had access to all relevant transcripts for years. It is essential to remember Trump’s character: he remained in his dining room, watching television as his supporters assaulted our Capitol and violently confronted law enforcement. For hours, he did not instruct the mob to disperse. The truth remains unchanged.”
The Tribune reported on Trump’s remarks while he was signing executive orders on Monday. He criticized the committee for allegedly “destroying documents” and noted that individuals have faced significant jail time for similar offenses. This comment was made in light of Biden’s extensive pardon for the January 6 Committee during the final days of his presidency.
Trump questioned, “What about this J6 committee? Why is he pardoning them?” while seated at the Resolute Desk, where he signed over 200 executive orders. He suggested that the destruction of documentation indicates guilt, stating, “The reason is that if you delete and destroy evidence, they have nothing, because they were guilty as hell.” He concluded, “They rigged it. It was a rigged deal. And when you do that, they look very bad, but I was a little surprised.”
However, what could be the rationale behind Biden’s actions? He granted her a pardon, as well as pardoning others. The underlying issue is the destruction of documents, and even in a civil case—which this situation does not pertain to—individuals could face significant prison time for such actions, he remarked.
According to the American Tribune, Biden announced the pardons on his final morning in office. He stated, “I uphold the rule of law and remain hopeful that the integrity of our legal institutions will ultimately triumph over political influences. Nevertheless, these circumstances are extraordinary, and I cannot, in good conscience, remain inactive. Unfounded and politically driven investigations cause significant distress to the lives, safety, and financial stability of those targeted, as well as their families. Even when individuals have committed no wrongdoing—and, in fact, have acted appropriately—and will eventually be vindicated, the mere existence of an investigation or prosecution can cause irreparable harm to their reputations and financial well-being.”
