WATCH: Democrat Pitches Four States Seceding, Joining Canada to Resist Trump Presidency

In a notable development within American politics, a Democratic state legislator from New York has proposed that four northeastern states of the United States consider secession to join Canada in opposition to President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to return to the White House following his victory in the presidential election held on November 5.

The lawmaker in question is State Senator Liz Krueger (D-28), who has been advocating for both the secession initiative and a plan to withhold over $300 billion in federal taxes as a means of resisting President-elect Trump. She has not only previously championed these concepts but has also recently defended them in a discussion with Politico.

The conversation regarding this matter began in September 2024 when Senator Krueger spoke with City and State New York.com about the possibility of a four-state secession movement involving New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut should Trump secure the election.

In the latter part of that interview, she remarked, “If Trump wins, yes, because, again, you mentioned I was somewhat pessimistic earlier when discussing this. On a more positive note, I was attempting to propose solutions, and I am aware that Canada has essentially indicated, ‘We will not allow you in if he wins.’ They have made their stance clear as individuals. This led me to think, ‘Why should I have to leave this country? I cherish this nation, and if Trump is re-elected, it is not the fault of myself or the people of New York.’”

She further elaborated, “Thus, I considered suggesting to Canada that rather than attempting to cross the border clandestinely, which would be quite challenging given our numbers, they might instead agree to allow us to form a new province, the southeast province of Canada. I proposed that New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont could unite to create this new province, even though I had not yet secured agreement from the other states.”

She further elaborated, contending that the inhabitants of the region would integrate seamlessly with Canadians, stating, “We have land connections. The Peace Bridge from Buffalo is a prime example. Essentially, the majority of individuals in these states identify as progressive Democrats. We would align quite well with the political ideologies of most Canadian elected representatives.”

In conclusion, she remarked, “I suggest that this could be a viable option, and I have received some informal feedback indicating that this idea may be well-received in Ottawa. Consider this: if we were in Europe, given the duration of our existence as a nation, Canada would have seen its borders shift approximately twenty times by now, correct?”

Krueger has consistently supported her unconventional ideas in recent times. In a conversation with Politico, she suggested, albeit vaguely yet significantly in light of her previous remarks on secession, that it is essential to adopt alternative strategies to counter Trump. She articulated this perspective by stating, “It is not unreasonable to think outside conventional frameworks.”

Providing another illustration of potential actions, Krueger, who chairs New York’s influential Senate Finance Committee, mentioned that New York could potentially withhold its residents’ federal tax contributions, asserting, “We are discussing substantial sums of money—funds that we could not possibly replace unless we significantly reduced the amount we send to the federal government.”
