A recent survey indicates that over half of potential U.S. voters are in favor of the immigration enforcement raids that have been implemented since President Donald Trump assumed office. The Rasmussen Reports survey, which gathered responses from 1,229 likely voters between January 26 and January 28, revealed that 57% of participants support the raids designed to apprehend and deport individuals residing in the country unlawfully. Among those in favor, 38% expressed strong support, whereas 39% opposed the actions, including 24% who strongly opposed them.
Additionally, the survey addressed the Trump administration’s initiative to investigate sanctuary cities that offer protection to immigrants. When respondents were asked if officials in these jurisdictions should face prosecution for hindering federal immigration enforcement, 48% agreed, 38% disagreed, and 14% remained uncertain, as reported by Newsmax.
The outlet cited additional results:
- 86% of those who strongly approve of the raids said they favor prosecuting sanctuary city officials if they interfere with federal enforcement measures.
- 81% of Republicans, 36% of Democrats, and 45% of voters not affiliated with either major party at least somewhat approve of the raids.
- 47% of Democrats said they strongly disapprove of the raids, along with 6% of Republicans and 16% of unaffiliated voters.
- 71% of Republicans, 28% of Democrats, and 46% of unaffiliated voters said they think sanctuary city officials who interfere with enforcement measures should be prosecuted.
- 56% of Democrats, 20% of Republicans, and 36% of unaffiliated voters said the officials should not be prosecuted.
A significant number of individuals, categorized by race or gender, expressed their support for the raids and advocated for the federal prosecution of city and state officials who protect undocumented migrants from immigration enforcement.
- 62% of men and 52% of women said they approve of the raids, and more men (53%) than women (44%) said they favor prosecuting the officials who do not cooperate with immigration enforcement.
- 58% of white voters, 54% of Black voters, 57% of Hispanic voters, and 50% of other minorities approve of the raids, but more Black voters were likely to oppose federal prosecution of sanctuary city officials.
The survey revealed a significant disparity between the supporters of Trump and those of former Vice President Kamala Harris regarding their approval of the raids. According to the report, 87% of Trump’s supporters expressed approval, while 70% of Harris’ supporters disapproved.
Earlier this week, Tom Homan, Trump’s Border Czar, engaged in a heated exchange with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during an interview concerning the administration’s ongoing mass deportation efforts, which have now involved certain elements of the FBI.
During the segment on “The Source,” Homan maintained his position when Collins inquired about the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) targeting undocumented individuals who are seeking refuge in schools, churches, and hospitals to evade deportation.
Collins questioned, “What is the standard for entering an elementary school? Immigration advocates have suggested that this could create a chilling effect for parents during school drop-off.”
Homan replied, “There should be no chilling effect unless your child poses a threat to public safety or national security. If they do, then they should indeed be concerned, as we are actively searching for them.”
Collins pointed out that the real concern pertains to parents who are undocumented immigrants.
“They are not exempt from scrutiny. They are in the country illegally, which is a serious issue,” Collins stated. “Entering this country unlawfully is a crime, and that is the reality. I would not feel secure if I were in Switzerland without legal status. Therefore, we will uphold the laws of this nation.”
Homan concluded, “Individuals who pose national security or public safety threats will find no sanctuary in this country, and we will pursue them wherever necessary.”
