In a remarkable online episode that transpired last week, Representative Dave Min, a progressive Congressman from California, directed his criticism towards President Donald Trump’s newly appointed White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, alleging that she was a false Christian based on her interpretation of a particular issue.
The matter that prompted Rep. Min’s vehement response involved a modification by the Trump Administration regarding the funding of several organizations that previously received federal support but are now being defunded, as the administration seeks to eliminate what it considers wasteful and often anti-American spending.
Despite Trump’s initial attempt to terminate their funding through an Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directive that effectively froze most federal grants and programs, a federal judge swiftly intervened, blocking the ruling within days. Consequently, the Trump Administration withdrew the order to pursue a revised approach.
In her commentary on the situation, Leavitt clarified that while the OMB funding memo had to be rescinded, other directives from President Trump remained intact. Notably, one of these enduring orders was the suspension of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives at the federal level.
In her original post, which incited Min’s outrage, Leavitt stated, “This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze. It is simply a rescission of the OMB memo. Why? To end any confusion created by the court’s injunction. The President’s EO’s on federal funding remain in full force and effect and will be rigorously implemented.”
In response, Rep. Min expressed his indignation, accusing her of being a false Christian for allegedly “bearing false witness” in her remarks regarding the memos. He tweeted, “’Thou shalt not bear false witness…’ Karoline Leavitt is a Fake Christian, like so many in this Golden Calf administration.”
This is not the first instance in which he has criticized her for her beliefs. For instance, when she remarked, “DOGE and OMB also discovered that approximately 50 million taxpayer dollars were allocated to fund condoms in Gaza. This represents an outrageous misuse of taxpayer funds,” Representative Min retaliated with a vehement response, stating, “… she proclaimed while donning a large cross to signal her piety and morality, even as she comfortably disseminates a blatant falsehood to hundreds of millions.” You can view Leavitt’s remarks that incited his ire here:
He further condemned her faith in a statement to Fox News Digital, asserting, “As someone who practices faith, I find it reprehensible that this administration exploits religion to further its agenda while deceitfully misrepresenting its actions—allowing children to go to bed hungry, denying veterans their rightful healthcare, and cutting funding for law enforcement and first responders.”
Responses on X criticized Representative Min for his harsh attacks on Leavitt. One commenter remarked, “It is unfortunate, @DaveMinCA, that you do not apply the same standards to yourself. You seek to judge a woman who identifies as Christian and label her a liar, while you yourself have lied and have been convicted of DUI. I will say this to you, Congressman (for now): those living in glass houses should refrain from throwing stones.”
Another individual pointed out his misuse of the Bible to misrepresent someone, stating, “Consider the irony of using biblical quotes and Christianity to defame another individual. Notice that you did not provide any supposed lies, as there were none. Return to the rock from which you emerged, false Christian.”
A further comment read, “I reside in your district, and it is disheartening to see you stoop so low as to weaponize someone’s faith against them. You should be the last to cast judgment given your legal troubles. An apology is owed to me, your constituents, and the press secretary. You are clearly allowing malevolent influences to dictate your actions.”
