Longtime CNN host Chris Cuomo, now with NewsNation, delivered a critical evaluation of the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing regarding Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth. Cuomo accused the lawmakers of focusing on cultural issues rather than pressing national security matters, labeling the hearing as a “toxic game of division.” His critique particularly targeted the Democratic questioning, which scrutinized Hegseth’s personal history, including his previous marital challenges.
Cuomo stated, “In my view, we witnessed the true adversary during Pete Hegseth’s Armed Services Committee hearing, and that adversary is us.” He emphasized that the real issue lies not with Hegseth but with the divisive tactics employed by those in power. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) interrogated Hegseth about a 2017 incident in Monterey, California, coinciding with the time Hegseth had a child with a woman who would later become his third wife.
Kaine pressed Hegseth, “You had just fathered a child two months prior with a woman who was not your spouse. I trust that you pledged fidelity in your marriages.” Hegseth replied, “I have made mistakes in my life, but I am grateful for the redemption offered by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Cuomo further questioned, “Does his marital history disqualify him from holding office? How many members of that committee, how many in Congress, could withstand the Kaine scrutiny?” He highlighted Kaine’s support for Bill Clinton despite similar controversies.
A bipartisan National Security Commission has determined that the United States is ill-prepared for potential conflicts with China or Russia. Are you aware of this? They raised concerns regarding our technological capabilities and military inventory. Recruitment efforts across the armed forces are notably lacking, Cuomo stated. “We are increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks, which are severely impacting us. Numerous significant incidents are occurring, including over military installations, yet no one can provide an explanation. Furthermore, this individual, who lacks experience in leading a federal agency, is being considered for a position overseeing the largest military apparatus in the world, which is also one of the federal government’s largest employers, while Tim Kaine seems more focused on discussing his personal life.”
“Countless families of military personnel are struggling with poverty while their loved ones are deployed. This is a pressing concern that they should not have to face. Yet, discussions revolve around his marriage and trivial matters rather than genuine threats,” Cuomo commented. “The most troubling aspect is that the right failed to seize the opportunity presented by the left to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the critical issues affecting national defense.”
During the hearing, Hegseth underwent thorough questioning from Democratic senators regarding his previous actions and perspectives on military policies, especially those related to women in combat and diversity initiatives. The session featured a rigorous investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, financial irresponsibility, and excessive alcohol consumption, all of which Hegseth has refuted. Republican senators predominantly supported Hegseth, emphasizing his military background and his alignment with President-elect Trump’s vision for the Department of Defense. The Senate Armed Services Committee is anticipated to cast a vote on Hegseth’s nomination in the near future, followed by a full Senate vote. If confirmed, Hegseth will take charge of the Department of Defense under the Trump administration.
